Size:
The standard size of brick recommended by BIS is 190mm×190mm×190mm. With mortar thickness, the size of such brick becomes 200mm×100mm×100mm.
Traditional bricks are those which not being standardized in size. The dimensions of traditional bricks vary from place to place. The commonly adopted size of traditional bricks is 230mm×114mm×76mm.
Weight:
The average weight of a brick is about 3 to 3.5 kg.

- Colour– The colour of good brick should be uniform. It may be deep red, cherry or copper coloured.
- Water absorption – Brick should not absorb water more than 20% of its dry weight when kept immersed in water for 24 hours.
- Crushing Strength – Should have the crushing strength below 5.5N/mm2.
- Shape – Brick should be uniform in shape with its edges sharp and true in shape.
- Size – The size of the brick should be as per Indian standards.
- Hardness -The brick should be hard so that if a scratch is made with a fingernail there should not be any impression on the brick.
- Soundness-Should give clear ringing sound when struck with each other
- Texture and compactness -The bricks should have a Uniform texture and should be compact.
